Cavalier Dr.G.K.Devarajulu

Founder Chairman & Managing Trustee


Govindaswamy Kuppuswamy DEVARAJULU (GKD), industrialist born on October 26th, 1911, at Pappanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore, was the eldest son of late Sri.G.Kuppuswamy Naidu.

He was the Chairman of Lakshmi Machine Works Limited, Lakshmi Textile Exporters Limited, Lakshmi Ring Travellers (Cbe) Limited and many other companies in the group.  He was a Member of the Society of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi

He was the Managing Trustee of G.Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Trust which runs  a  multispeciality 600 bedded Hospital, a Higher Secondary School and a Feeder School in Coimbatore; a High School at Palladam and an Arts College at Kovilpatti.

He was awarded the Hon. Membership of Textile Association of India, Bombay during May 1971 and a Gold Medal by Association of Merchants and Manufacturers of Textile Machinery and Accessories, Bombay, for his services to Textile and Textile Machinery Industry.

He was the Zonal Member in the Advisory Board of Life Insurance Corporation of India and Industrial Finance Corporation, New Delhi (Textile Advisory Committee) and was the Committee Member in National Railway User’s Consultative Council, Reserve Bank Foreign Exchange Advisory Committee, Textile Advisory Committee and National Textile Corporation.

He was the Chairman of the Southern India Mills’ Association, Coimbatore for the year 1960 and Chairman of the Indian Cotton Mills’ Federation, Bombay for the years 1966 & 1967.  He was also Chairman of the South India Textile Research Association, Coimbatore from its very inception for about 12 years till 1969.  He was also Chairman of the Association of Man-made Fibre Industry, Bombay and the Development Council for Textile Machinery Industry consecutively for 7 years.  He was President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, New Delhi for 1982-83.  He was also a Member of the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council, Bombay.

Cavalier Dr.Devarajulu was the Director in Export Credit and Guarantee Corporation of the Government of India, Committee Member in the Indo-Japan Business Co-operation Committee, Indian National Committee and Textiles Committee, Board of Trade and Central Advisory Council of Industries.

Besides a Honorary Consul Grade II for Italy for the State of Keraala and Coimbatore District, he was aptly honoured by the Government of Italy with the Knight (Cavaliere) of the Order ‘Stella Della Solidareita Italiana’ during December 1974.

Cavalier Dr Devarajulu was deeply devoted to Social Service activities.  The Coimbatore Rotary Club has rightly and promptly honoured him with the conferment of ‘For the Sake of Honour Award’, the highest recognition that a Rotary Club can give to any individual in recognition of his meritorious outstanding services to community.

He was also honoured with the conferment of ‘Community Service Award’ in 1978 by the Lions Club of Ramnagar, Coimbatore.

Cavalier Dr Devarajulu was also honoured with the Award of the ‘Founding Father of Textile Machinery Industry’ at the India-ITME’80 exhibition on 30.11.1980 at Bombay.

On 28th October 1980, Cavalier Dr Devarajulu was awarded ‘Outstanding Industrialist NIQA 1980 Award’ at Madras by National Institution of Quality Assurance, Madras.

He was awarded a “Doctorate” by the World University of Round Tables, Arizona, USA for ‘Human Resources Management’. Cavalier Dr.Devarajulu was honoured with a Doctorate by Bharathiar University, Coimbatore at its first convocation on 03.04.1984.

Cavalier Dr.Devarajulu was an active Freemason and was the Regional Grand Master of the Regional Grand Lodge of Southern India.  He was the Founder and Chairman of the Coimbatore Masonic Charity Trust which runs a Childrens’ Hospital and a Working Womens’ Hostel.
